Farmers started off insuring agricultural equipment and over the years have expanded upon their services.  Farmers are one of the old, well established US insurance companies that have stood the test of time and are now trading on the net.  We decided to see if their site matched up to those of their rivals.

This site has great navigation.  It is clear, simple to use and you are always just a few clicks away from the info you need.

The online quote tool is situated conveniently on the home page and the general design of the site makes it easy to read and pleasant to use.  Good job.

How easy is it to get an online quote? Here we evaluate how insurance quotes are given and the time it takes to get a quote..

You can get online quotes for auto, life, home & car insurance.  You can also find a local agent.

The quotation tool follows the standard process and is simple to complete.  It produces a well-laid out quote offering three different levels and states that an agent will call to follow up the quote using the personal data we had input.

Whilst some may appreciate the subsequent contact, others will find it an unwanted nuisance. We were given the option to decline the sales call and when we took this were signposted to the details of local agents which we were encouraged to call.

The site has a state by state guide to discounts.  Discounts are applied where multiple Farmers policies are purchased, for new customers and under many more criteria.

As is good practice, there is no way to purchase an online insurance policy direct.  You need to discuss your needs fully with an agent first, who submits the policy on your behalf.

Possible payment options for policies were not well promoted on the site.

What else can I do here? We gave extra points to sites with videos, chat rooms, blogs, downloads, merchandise and audio..
We only found one video on the site but that didn’t work.  The Farmers site is very text-reliant and would really benefit from video and audio.  There are some nice financial guides for major life-cycle events which would translate well to a more modern medium.
