Liberty Mutual offer vehicle, life and home insurance. However the product variety was distinctly lacking in some areas. Vehicle insurance, for example, was restricted to car and motorcycle, whereas other sites had all number of varieties, for example boats. Liberty Mutual need to do more to keep up with the big boys.

How easy is it to navigate around the site? We tried and tested it out and graded..

The menu has three main categories; auto, home and life insurance.

The navigation categories are very similar and confusing. There is ‘car insurance’, ‘auto insurance’ and ‘auto policy’ for example – these should all be scooped together under one clear heading. This site’s navigation is too dispersed and duplicated for ease of use.

The process for online quotes is fairly standard and produces a two level quote; however these are not laid out side by side for ease of review but are on two separate tabs. A definite case of ‘could do better’.

You can purchase insurance direct from this site, which holds several security certificates. It would be nice however, for them to advertize the payment methods clearly on the site. At present you have to go through the quote and purchase screens before knowing what your options are. As some people are looking for the ability to pay in installments or wish to use a specific method, this is an annoying omission.

What else can I do here? We gave extra points to sites with videos, chat rooms, blogs, downloads, merchandise and audio..

There are videos on the homepage but one jumped and spluttered all the way through. They run ‘The Responsibility Project’ which has videos, films and stories which can be commented upon by viewers.

Whilst it’s nice to see video being used on the site it tends to be for short promos and their social project. It would be more impressive to see video, audio and podcasts used for the dissemination of policy, cover and benefit information, making it a little easier to digest. They’ve made a start on the multimedia front but need to expand their thinking further and apply it to the more central areas of their site.
